Name: Tina Porter

Hometown: Buffalo Creek, Colorado, Afula, Israel, NYC, LA

What it means to you to “be present”: Being present to me is being able to get out of my head to truly see, feel, hear, smell & touch what’s in front of me in that moment.

Favorite items from be present: I wear my Kona Pants through every season.. if it’s cold, I just add some knee highs with fun stripes that match the lotus, sun or moon that’s on my butt :)

The woven fabric with a moderate stretch – they’re lightweight part cotton, nylon and a lil bit of spandex- Fuhget about it- they’re the best things ever designed!! Thank you BP!!

Brief Bio:

My theme for my life has been, “Why Not?!” Originally from the Rocky Mountains, I moved to Israel at 16. My Mother foresaw a ‘gypsy’ in me and wanted me to experience the world! From there, for the next few years, I explored the Middle East and Europe (both alone and with friends). Landing in NYC, I got into The American Academy of Dramatic Arts and got to spend the next fun chapter (early 20‘s) of my life really living out my dream inspired by the movie, FAME. Los Angeles became home after NYC where I was introduced to Yoga. A friend who was picking me up to see a movie said, “You wanna try a yoga class instead?” I crinkled up my nose and was hesitant at first. At that stage in my life and really in our western world, all I knew of yoga was super skinny men in contortions and that woman with the long braid on PBS who showed us yoga stretches in her unitard. It seemed old and dusty, unattainable and odd.. but still, my response to that friend was, “Why not?!” Boom—and my life has unfolded on that red carpet ever since.. in the form of a yoga mat, of course!

Who/what inspires you?

I’m inspired by those who play when they can and focus when they need to. The people who inspire me are the ones who take chances, but are responsible and grounded enough to pull back if it seems too impulsive or irresponsible. I’m inspired by spontaneous people and I’m inspired by those who can plan. I’m fascinated by Type A’er’s because I’m so not that.. but aspire to be.. a little bit.. I think ;)

Fun Facts:

I’ve had my nose ring since 1986! I’m currently taking piano lessons, have a green satin blanket that I wear around my shoulders at home. I eat ice cream with a fork and dinner is not complete unless there’s a candle or lantern lit. I grew up in a log cabin without central heat or a shower, just a claw foot bath tub. On winter mornings when I awoke for school, there would be a layer of ice on my sheets right under my chin frozen from the condensation.

Favorite Food: Indian deliciousness & Trader Joe’s Chocolate ice cream

Favorite Vacation Spot: I love the mountains, I love the rolling hills, I love the flowers, I love the daffodils, I love the fireside when all the lights are low.. boom de yadda boom de yadda.  I love visiting places that are rich in culture, color, music, faces, smells of all kinds etc...

Favorite Music: everything but rap.. sorry, does that make me so un-cool?

About Tina’s book: a dream project will be writing a kids book on breath awareness and my Mom illustrating. She’s an incredible artist who still lives up in the mountains, has a tee pee and chops wood at the age of 76! Her creative drive, wacky humor, vibrant color choices of lipstick and generosity inspires me!
